Don't worry! You don't need to know about nanoscience or comics. You will learn everything there! At the end of the workshop you will have a project half-finished which you'll be able to present for the nanoKOMIK challenge.

WORKSHOP DYNAMICS

To start, a researcher will explain some amazing properties which materials can have thanks to nanoscience. Then we will be able to select or invent nanopowers for our characters.

In addition to this, a cartoonist will show us how to draw and create a comic guiding us through the creative process. We will use comic language to write and draw stories related to superheroes and nanotechnology. The distinctive expressive features of this genre will be reviewed and we will develop their possibilities to reinvent it, adapting it to our convenience.

The workshop format will combine theory and practice. The aim is to find the motivation to write the story and summarise ideas in representative images conveying what we want to communicate. Everything will be used by the participants to enhance their reading skills and analyse images and their meaning to draw stories which are better fitted to their interests and use them effectively for storytelling.

STRUCTURE:

  • Definition of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
  • Brief introduction to some amazing phenomena taking place at the nanoscale. The aim is to inspire participants to imagine nanopowers for their comic character on the basis of basic background information.
  • Definition of a comic. How to create a comic.
  • The script; what to tell and how to tell.
  • From concept to image; how to express what we want to communicate efficiently.
  • Page layout.
  • Drawing, ink in and colour in.
  • Image processing for editing.
